How To Create a Personal Timeline

Coming up with a personal timeline for yourself or your friends is always fun and engaging because it’s a chronological journal of the times within all of your lives.

Putting your life down on paper is a great way to reflect on where you are and where you want to be. To remember important dates, people and events and to be reminded of how precious your life is not only to you but to others as well. It’s a great way to look back and an even better way to plan for the future.

Here are a few tips on how to make a personal timeline for yourself or your friends.
Identify eras. The first thing you have to do is to divide up your life in decades. Come up with significant events or people that have influenced you during those ten-year segments.
Refer to photos.  Remembering events or people may be tricky, so for reference, pull out those old family albums and flip through them. Going through the photos do not only jog your memory but are lots of fun!
Proceed chronologically. It can be quite exciting to jump ahead to the more enjoyable parts of your timeline but it’s important that you stick to the order they happened in life. Take time to carefully examine and reflect on each age and era before moving on to the next.
Keep it positive!  The purpose of a personal timeline is to figure out where you are, where you want to go, and how to get there. If you come across some negative events or memories, find a way to spin positivity from them. Example: if you were bullied when you were younger, label it as the moment you learned to stand up for yourself.
Get creative!  The timeline you’re creating doesn’t have to be something on paper. Depending on how creative you get, you can make it a PowerPoint presentation, a painting, a collage, origami, whatever you imagine your timeline can appear. Just remember that it has to be something tangible you can look at and refer to now and then. Everything else is up to your creativity.
Take your time. For something as personal and as deep as your timeline, you should take your time to re-create and fill out. This is your life or your friend’s life you’re putting together so take as much time to be contemplative and insightful as you can be. If it takes months to complete, then take all the time you need to assemble it. You need this to be as inspirational and reflective as possible so don’t rush it.
Private function.  If you’re making a timeline for yourself, keep it as private as possible. Decide who among the important people in your life you may want to share it with. Your personal timeline could be a source of strength and inspiration and you don’t want others to draw from your personal source of inspiration, do you?

Personal timelines are fun to do and can have a profound effect on yourself or the people you’re making it for. It’s your life made tangible and real made even more fun to look at because of your creativity and style.
