Nothing is more embarrassing than to have your guests walk into your grubby house that reeks of unclean cloths, sweaty bed sheets, dirty socks, fusty refrigerators, grimy lavatory, and just any other thing that contributes foul odor to the air. Here are some ways to avoid such embarrassing situation.
Make sure your house is properly ventilated
Stale air is warmer and tends to rise up. This warm, humid air carries odor and must be eliminated to make room for fresh air. This is why proper ventilation is mandatory. A properly ventilated house allows the existing stench to escape, and aids in the circulation of fresh air.
Clean your refrigerator once (or twice) a month
Sometimes, it is difficult to identify what is causing an odor. One of the places that can become headquarter of putrid smell is your refrigerator. If not cleaned regularly, refrigerators can get really messy and stinky. Clean your refrigerators once in a month. You do not want your guests to breathe a wind of unpleasant odor as you open the refrigerator to fetch drinks for them.
Don't rely on room fresheners
It is often tempting to spew room fresheners all around to get rid of smell, but it is not a cure for the problem. While it may mask the odor promptly and make your house smell delightful to your guests, the effects would be temporary. What if the guests want to spend a night or two in your house? What if they wake up next morning to the nauseating smell of that kitchen vat before you could spew room freshener all around? Treat the source of odor rather than camouflaging it.
Don't trust your nose, trust your eyes.
Our brain is designed to detect changes in stimulus. When a stimulus is present for a long period of time, our brain becomes fatigued and ignores it. Our attention shifts away from the stimulus and we don't feel its presence anymore. Psychologists call it 'Sensory Adaptation'. Just imagine a situation where you get adapted to the smell of those stinking socks that hang behind that cupboard in your living room. You will think everything is fine, but only when your guests visit the house they will observe how much of a pig you are!
